ISO 178

ISO 178 is the international standard for determining flexural properties of rigid and semi-rigid plastic materials through a 3 point bend test. Plastic specimens that are tested through the practices of ISO 178 are meant to be tested under controlled conditions using predetermined plastic specimen sizes. ISO 178 plastic bend testing standard is meant to be followed for determining plastic flexural properties, and not to determine plastic flexural properties of components.

Plastic that can be tested with the practices of ISO 178 include thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics. Thermoplastic molds, extrusions, fiber reinforced composites, and rigid sheets are acceptable to test with the practices of ISO 178. Thermosetting molds, filled and reinforced composites, and sheets can be tested with the practices of ISO 178. 3 point bend testing of plastic materials is done to determine flexural properties of plastic materials. The 3 point bend test practices of ISO 178 are done to determine plastic flexural properties such as max fiber stress, flexural yield, flexural strength, max strain, modulus of elasticity and stress-strain characteristics.
